Welcome to Beyond the Map – a digital media project that explores how livestreaming is transforming the way people find, experience and engage with tourism.
I’m Eliana Wong, the creator of Beyond the Map, I’m a journalism student at the University of Melbourne. I’m an aspiring journalist interested in Australian tourism, feminism, and Australian local affairs.
In the past, tourism was experienced through brochures, guidebooks, television shows and images. Today, travelers may discover places in real-time via livestreams, social media and interactive digital content – sometimes even before they’ve set foot there.
Beyond the Map explores the clash of tourism with livestreaming. Real Time Destinations
“Livestreaming is bringing people to destinations. Live coverage of a beach or cultural festival, nature reserve, metropolitan street or regional town can capture movement, ambiance and unexpected moments as they unfold.
Traditional trip photography or edited film is more passive on the part of the audience, but livestreaming invites participation. It enables viewers to react, ask questions and shape conversations in real time, establishing a much more involved relationship between the traveler, narrator and destination.
Livestreaming is at the digital crossroads of tourism, journalism, social media and digital storytelling. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram and TikTok give tourist organizations, creators, journalists and communities new avenues to engage with potential visitors.
The study analyzes the impact of livestreaming on travel decisions, destination marketing and Australia’s image, and reflects on its cultural, ethical and environmental impacts. Australia in the Digital Eye
